# Zoom in, and the text stays sharp

> Zoom deep into a screen recording and the text stays sharp. Lumae redraws the enlarged picture with an upscaling model trained on interfaces. Free for Mac.

A recording holds only so many pixels, so a deep zoom usually turns its text soft. Lumae redraws the zoomed picture with its own upscaling model, trained on interfaces, so letters keep their edges in the export and on any frame you pause on.

## How it works

1. **Zoom as usual.** Super resolution starts on in every project, in the Motion tab's Zooms section. Every picture is scaled with Lumae's Lanczos filter, and once a zoom enlarges the recording past about 1.5×, the model eases in over it, so no frame jumps.
2. **Pause to look.** Playback keeps the quicker filter so it stays smooth. Pause on a zoom and the frame is redrawn by the model a moment later, the way the export will draw it.
3. **Export.** Every frame a zoom enlarges goes through the model on your Mac's GPU. On an M1 Pro that adds up to about 0.2 s to each of those frames.

## What you can change

- **Super resolution:** On by default, in Motion › Zooms. Off, zoomed frames use the filter alone: softer, and quicker to export.
- **Scale:** How far a zoom pushes in, from 1× to 6×, on its page. The deeper it goes, the more the model adds over the filter.
- **Size:** The canvas in the Frame tab, and the export's own. The larger the frame, the more a recording is enlarged, so the model takes over at gentler zooms.
- **Reset Motion:** Turns Super resolution back on with the tab's other defaults, from the ⋯ menu beside the tab's title.

## The numbers

- **How far the model enlarges in one pass. The filter takes that to the frame's exact size:** 4×
- **Enlargement where the model starts to ease in over the filter. It is fully in by 1.6×:** 1.4×
- **The model, compiled into Lumae: 89,000 weights trained from scratch on interfaces:** 180 KB
- **Fidelity on web pages drawn at four times the density, against 29.0 dB for Apple's built-in super resolution and 25.7 dB for the filter:** 36.1 dB
- **Time on an M1 Pro to redraw what a 3× zoom shows of a 2720 × 1720 frame:** 50 ms
- **Tiles the picture is redrawn in, overlapping so no seam shows:** 256 px

## Questions

### Does my recording leave my Mac?

No. The model is part of Lumae, 180 KB compiled into the app, and it runs on your Mac's GPU. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is downloaded.

### Why is the preview softer while it plays?

Playback keeps the filter, since the model takes too long to run sixty times a second. Pause, and the frame is redrawn a moment later the way the export will draw it.

### Which clips does it work on?

Screen recordings, and pictures with no transparency in them. An imported video keeps the filter, since it may be a camera's picture rather than a screen's.

### Does it make exports slower?

Only the frames a zoom enlarges, by up to about 0.2 s each on an M1 Pro. Turn Super resolution off to skip it. Every picture is still scaled with Lumae's Lanczos filter, which is sharper than plain scaling.

### Does it help a recording of a non-Retina display?

Yes. A display at one pixel a point leaves a zoom half as much to enlarge, and the model is trained on those too. Text comes out sharper than the filter draws it, if not as sharp as from a Retina recording.

### Can it fix a blurry recording?

No. It redraws the pixels a recording holds at a larger size. The blocks a low-bitrate recording was compressed into are enlarged with it, not removed.
